This distinctive Victorian sterling silver belt bangle dates stylistically to around the 1890s. Designed to resemble a miniature belt, its adjustable fastening and pierced sizing holes are surrounded by ornate machine-engraved floral scrollwork and fleur-de-lis inspired decoration.
The broad 19mm silver band gives the bracelet a striking presence while remaining relatively lightweight at 17.1g. Its adjustable belt-style fastening allows the circumference to be altered from approximately 15cm to 19.5cm, making this an unusually versatile Victorian bangle.
Belt and buckle jewellery became particularly fashionable during the Victorian period, with the buckle often associated with loyalty, strength and enduring attachment. The design appeared extensively in bracelets, rings and brooches during the later 19th century.
The bracelet is stamped “Sterling Silver”. No maker’s mark or additional hallmarks have been recorded.
