It takes at least 50 million years to form a diamond. If you were to carbon date any diamond, it would be at least 50 million years old. Most natural diamonds are over 1 billion years old.
Because of this mining for the popular gemstones is not sustainable.
Lab created gemstones are reliant on fossil-based energy, by recreating a natural formation (which takes lots of heat over millions of years). On average a 1 carat lab grown diamond uses 750kw hours of electricity in manufacture – this would power the average UK household for 94 days*
Good jewellery should last forever. All gemstones will last forever.
We should just re-use what we already have.
